Rebel

Unedited Final
A rebel is someone who goes against the norms, rules, or what is expected. I imagine a rebel as a younger person breaking rules, a teenager rebelling against their parents or society, but I felt like this would be a boring composition to create, I wanted to explore the word deeper. What is not usually associated with a rebel? How could someone be considered a rebel, but not break rules? I wanted to expand on the idea that a rebel can be someone who breaks social norms. When someone thinks of someone with depression they think of a person dressing in all black, dark make up and their screamo music playing on a constant repeat. However, depression can effect anyone, your mom, the popular girl, the jock, the nerd, and it doesn't mean they are obligated to become a goth. This stereotype can be harmful to people because they aren't able to recognize the signs of depression in friends who doesn't ooze black and death. This serious topic needs to be addressed and I wanted to tackle this.
The subject in the photo has a large gash on her face oozing black “blood” to show that she feels dark and empty on the inside since black often represents sadness and depression. However, the girl is seemingly normal on the outside with minimal make-up and a relatively neutral facial expression. The cut not only allows the subjects black inside is be visible on the outside, but the cut also represents self-harm which is a symptom of depression.
This photo was my first attempt at special effects makeup. With the cut, I was extremely nervous that it wouldn't look realistic. The whole concept of the photo depended on whether the cut look real or not, thankfully it all turned out decent. I enjoyed using this type of make-up, it presented a new challenge to me that could help expand what I can do in a photo.
