Paradox

Final

The saying ‘calm before the storm’ came to mind when I thought about paradoxes. Storms are so rough and violent, but right before they hit its calm and quiet. I liked this idea, but I wanted to put my own spin on the saying, ‘calm in the storm’. I wanted to explore how people can be so calm cool and collected in mist of challenging, sad, or even scary times. This frame of mind that some people have completely baffles me, I am the complete opposite, freaking out when things get hard. It is amazing how well some people can handle themselves in tough situations and can even be other people’s calm in the storm. I know a few people who can be that calm in the storm, like an oasis, they bring my spirits up and give me confidence to continue the trek.

The subject, a dark figure, is seen to be standing among a storm. Even though she is outside exposing herself to the storm, she is prepared with her umbrella, raincoat, and rain boots. She’s calm, she’s ready, she is calm in the storm. The eerie environment is a symbol for the difficult times mentioned previously and how unusual it is for this figure to be outside in this weather, but she does not run from the storm, she invites it, ready for whatever it has to bring.
